Altiplano and Lipez

Western Bolivia, along the Chilean border, is one of the most rugged places on Earth and one of the least densely populated. Resources are scarce, and the altitude and climate, with its salt, sand, and rocky deserts, lakes with undrinkable water, and volcanoes, some of which are still active, make life difficult. Only a few isolated communities of the Aymara people live there.
